I arrived in Vienna on Thursday, May 8, 2025, and after collecting my luggage and exiting the baggage claim area, I made my way to the CAT (City Airport Train) ticket booth. There, I purchased a combination ticket that included a one-way express ride from the airport to the city center and a 72-hour unlimited public transportation pass. You can learn more about the service at cityairporttrain.com. The total cost? $38.04 USD—well worth the convenience and flexibility for exploring the city.

With three full days to enjoy Vienna before boarding the M/V River Harmony for a two-week river cruise to Amsterdam, I hit the ground running.
On my first day, I walked about 8 minutes from my accommodation to the Stadtpark U-Bahn station, operated by Wiener Linien. From there, I hopped on the U4 line heading toward Hütteldorf.
Another eight-minute walk brought me to the gates of the magnificent Schönbrunn Palace, arriving just before 10:30 a.m.—a perfect start time to enjoy the site before the midday crowds rolled in. I was ready to step into Austria’s imperial past.

I entered the palace using a Sisi Pass, which includes access to the Grand Tour-complete with a self-paced audio guide that brings the imperial rooms and stories of Empress Elisabeth vividly to life.
For the next two hours, I became fully immersed in 40 imperial state rooms, walking in the footsteps of Emperor Franz Joseph and Empress Elisabeth (Sisi) during their summer stays.
Note: A timeslsot reservation is required for both Schonbrunn Palace and for the Sisi Museum. Even if you've already purchased your ticket, you still NEED TO RESERVE A SPECIFIC ENTRY TIME. Fortunately, this can be done quickly and conveniently online through their official website.

The Mirror Room, where Mozart once performed, and the Great Gallery, with its golden ornamentation and sparkling chandeliers, were true highlights. Each room conveyed the elegance, discipline, and extravagance of 19th-century court life.

After touring the palace, I opted for a classic horse-drawn carriage ride (called a Fiaker) through the palace grounds. For €15 per person, it was a tranquil and charming way to appreciate the grandeur of Schönbrunn’s gardens—complete with tree-lined boulevards, manicured flower beds, and distant views of the Gloriette.

Gloriette

During my stay in Vienna I used a Sisi Pass, which can be purchased for €51 per adult. It grants access to three major attractions tied to the life and legend of Empress Elisabeth:
1. Schönbrunn Palace – Grand Tour
2. Sisi Museum & Imperial Apartments – Hofburg Palace
3. Vienna Furniture Museum (closed during my visit)
Sisi Museum - Hofburg Palace
No other site captures Sisi's mystique like this one. Through six galleries, I explored her personal belongings, intricate gowns, beauty accessories, and even handwritten letters. It's a hauntingly beautiful homage to one of Europe's most fascinating royals.

Imperial Apartments – Hofburg Palace
The 19 rooms comprising the private and state apartments of Franz Joseph and Sisi are preserved in exquisite detail. From the Emperor’s military desk to Sisi’s salon, the apartments offer a vivid sense of imperial lifestyle during the height of the Habsburg empire.
Vienna Imperial Furniture Museum
Although closed during my visit, this unique collection reportedly houses furniture from Baroque to Modern eras, including pieces used in the Sisi Trilogy films. It offers a behind-the-scenes look at how royalty lived—and how their world has been portrayed onscreen.
Is the Sisi Pass Worth It?
Absolutely. Here’s why:
1. Money-Saving Bundle
Includes three major sites at a reduced price—great value if you plan to visit even just two.
2. Skip-the-Line
Access
Bypass the long Schönbrunn ticket queues and booked my time slot in advance.
3. A
Cohesive Historical Experience
The pass follows Sisi’s story across multiple locations, providing a full
picture of her iconic and tragic life.
4. Flexible
Validity
You have one
full year to use the pass, so there's no rush to cram
everything into one day.
5. Easy
Online Purchase
Go to Imperial Tickets, Entry at
each site was quick and convenient.
Bonus Tip: The pass does not include the carriage ride, zoo, Gloriette, or Privy Garden at Schönbrunn—but it covers the most meaningful historical locations.
Who Actually Lived in Schönbrunn? Meet the Habsburgs
Schönbrunn Palace was the summer residence of the Habsburg dynasty, one of Europe’s most powerful royal families. Their rule lasted more than 600 years, shaping not only Austria but much of Central Europe.
Notable Habsburgs at Schönbrunn include:
· Maria Theresa (1717–1780): Transformed Schönbrunn into a grand Baroque palace.
· Joseph II: Her reformist son.
· Francis II: Last Holy Roman Emperor, grandfather to Franz Joseph.
· Franz Joseph I (1830–1916): Born and died at Schönbrunn, ruling Austria for 68 years.
· Empress Elisabeth (“Sisi”): His iconic wife, remembered for her elegance and tragic life.
· Archduke Franz Ferdinand: Nephew of Franz Joseph; his assassination in 1914 led to WWI.
After the carriage ride, I strolled the Schönbrunn Gardens, soaking in the serenity of fountains, statues, and lush paths. I wrapped up my afternoon with a refreshing Austrian beer at a garden café—an ideal toast to a day immersed in imperial charm.
Whether you're a history lover, royalty enthusiast, or just enjoy beautiful architecture and gardens, Schönbrunn Palace and the Sisi Pass offer a rich, meaningful experience. It’s not just sightseeing—it’s time travel through elegance, power, and the personal legacy of Austria’s most famous empress.
