DRAVUNI ISLAND: FIJI’S HIDDEN GEM

Tucked away in the Kadavu Group of islands, Dravuni Island offers a glimpse of the real Fiji — a rare gem in a sea of modernized ports of call. Unlike the typical port stop to visit bustling cities and manmade resorts, Dravuni is authentic, boasting white sandy beaches, swaying palm trees, and azure waters. Here, you’ll find NO restaurants, NO ATMs, and NO Wi-Fi, just a quaint Fijian village and an invitation to unplug, reconnect with nature, and embrace the local culture.

Arriving on Dravuni Island

On Monday, November 18, 2024, the Grand Princess anchored off the coast of Dravuni Island. Tender tickets were distributed early in the morning, and by 10:30 a.m., I had stepped onto the island, eager to explore this 1.5-mile-long paradise.

A few fun facts to set the scene:

  • Dravuni Island has been inhabited for over 100 years.
  • It is home to only 100 residents.
  • On average, just two ships per month visit the island.
  • Ships arrive twice weekly to bring supplies and pick up garbage.
  • Dravuni is the first island in the Great Astrolabe Reef chain.

So, what does one do on an island with so little? Surprisingly, quite a lot! Here are my top five activities to make the most of your visit.

1. Walk to Inland Peak

Start your day with a short hike to the island’s inland peak, which rises 490 feet (150 meters). The trail is easy to follow and offers panoramic views of the surrounding islands, sparkling waters, and the full stretch of Dravuni. It’s the perfect spot for capturing a photo of your cruise ship anchored offshore.

2. Snorkel or Scuba Along the Reef

Dravuni Island’s shores are encased in the vibrant Great Astrolabe Reef, the fourth-largest coral reef in the world.   Snorkeling here is a must. The crystal-clear waters reveal colorful coral and marine life, easily accessible from the beach. For the best experience, head to the rocky outcrop just to the right of the wharf.

3. Walk Through the Village

The heart of Dravuni lies in its village. Locals greet cruise visitors warmly, and a stroll through the village reveals sulu (sarongs) for sale, vibrant against the backdrop of lush coconut palms. Don’t miss the local school, the island’s most striking building. Nearby, the fire station doubles as a marine life research hub for the University of the South Pacific.

4. Enjoy Fresh Tropical Treats

On cruise ship days, villagers set up stalls offering fresh tropical fruits and coconut water. Watching a local expertly crack open a coconut is as delightful as the refreshing drink itself. Be sure to try some of Fiji’s exotic fruits — a true taste of the tropics.

5. Boat Tour Around the Island

While the island is small enough to explore on foot, boat tours offer a unique perspective. Opt for an authentic experience by hopping aboard a local fisherman’s boat. The cost the day of my visit was $10USD per person.  The turquoise waters and stunning coastline are sure to leave you in awe.

Dravuni Island is more than just a port of call; it’s an invitation to experience the unspoiled beauty of Fiji and connect with its warm-hearted people. Whether hiking to the inland peak, snorkeling in the Great Astrolabe Reef, or simply soaking up the tranquil atmosphere, this tiny island promises memories to last a lifetime. So, when your cruise ship drops anchor here, step off the tender and into a paradise that feels worlds away from modern life.
